So the second step is a block-in. I look at my value sketch and loosely paint in the big shapes trying to match those values. Here is today's block-in. After doing the block-in I've decided to use a canvas with a different aspect ratio to get a more dynamic composition.
Just like you wouldn't look great being only bones, neither does the painting. It really isn't meant to be seen. But it is what is on my easel today.
