The first puzzle piece is the composition. Is my eye led all around the painting? Do I have a clear focal point? Is my drawing accurate?
Then I think about the values or lights and darks in the painting. Do they make an interesting pattern? Do they read correctly?
The third puzzle piece might be color. Is it harmonious? Does it set a mood?
The fourth piece is balance. Does one side feel too heavy or too light.
Then brushwork, or in my case knife work. Is it varied? Do I have a variety of soft and hard edges.
So you can see why it might take a long time to assemble all my pieces into a painting that makes me happy.
For this piece I did a mighty mini, then a small, and finally a full sized painting.
What do you think? Do all the pieces fit?
